Our Programs

Since its founding in 1913, Delta Sigma Theta has clearly distinguished itself as a public service organization that boldly confronts the challenges of African Americans and, hence, all Americans. Over the years, a wide range of programs addressing education, health, international development, and strengthening of the African-American family have evolved. In realizing its mission, Delta Sigma Theta provides an extensive array of public service initiatives through its Five-Point Programmatic Thrust of Economic Development, Educational Development, International Awareness and Involvement, Physical and Mental Health, and Political Awareness and Involvement.

Economic Development

The Burlington Alumnae Chapter promotes economic mobility and financial literacy through the following programs and initiatives:

  • The Black Business Expo promotes and supports Black entrepreneurship and wealth by providing a platform for local Black-owned businesses to gain exposure to new clientele and network with one another.
  • Financial Fortitude is a national initiative designed to help sorority members and local communities attain personal wealth and financial security. Financial Fortitude was established as a result of increasing unemployment, Social Security debts, and the widening gap between wealth and poverty.

Educational Development

The Burlington Alumnae Chapter supports learners of all ages through annual scholarships, youth development programs, and adult education initiatives. Our signature activities include:

  • Crimson Conversations is a five-part series that seeks to promote awareness and education regarding taboo topics and reduce the stigma around those sensitive topics.
  • Dr. Jeanne L. Noble Delta GEMS offers a road map for college and career planning through activities that provide opportunities for self-reflection and individual growth. We are proud to have an award-winning program that has been recognized at the regional and national level.
  • Academic scholarships are awarded annually to qualified high school seniors in Alamance and Caswell counties through our Gladys Outlaw Gallop Scholarship Fund.
  • The National Library Project was established by Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated as the first national program. We have continued the legacy of this initiative by contributing book baskets to elementary schools in our service area and hosting the They Look Like Me! Book Fair for children of all ages.

International Awareness and Involvement

Through innovative programming and fundraising efforts, the Burlington Alumnae Chapter is committed to supporting the Sorority's International Awareness & Involvement Sustainability Plan for the seven approved international projects:

  • Adelaide Tambo School (South Africa)
  • Delta House/Vashti Village (Swaziland)
  • DST School Cynthia Butler McIntyre Campus (Haiti)
  • Mary Help of the Sick Hospital (Kenya)
  • I CAN FLY International (Kenya)
  • Muindi Mbingu Boys Secondary School (Kenya)
  • T.R.E.E. – Training Resources for Early Education (South Africa)

Physical and Mental Health

The Burlington Alumnae Chapter aims to positively impact the health and wellbeing of our members and the communities in which we serve. Our signature activities include:

  • A Community Health Fair to address the barriers of health disparities among African Americans by providing our community with free health screenings, educational resources, and access to healthcare professionals.
  • The June Marie Thompson Blood Drive is an annual health event we sponsor to honor the late June Marie Thompson. She was an outstanding member of the Alamance-Burlington community who was a bone marrow donor and blood transfusion recipient and a member of both Jack & Jill and Delta Sigma Theta, Inc.
  • Red Goes Pink are health education activities aimed at increasing breast cancer awareness within our community. Example activities have included hosting a Breast Cancer Awareness BINGO Night, with proceeds benefitting Little Pink Houses of Hope; volunteering at community health fairs and other breast cancer awareness events like Cone Health's Pink Party; and offering breast cancer screenings and educational resources through our chapter-sponsored health fair.

Political Awareness and Involvement

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. has been committed to service through social action since our founding in 1913. Our 22 Founders participated in the Suffrage March of 1913, just two months after establishing the Sorority, and our members have been at the forefront of social and political struggles ever since. Under the auspices of the National Social Action Commission, the Sorority continues to institute activities that foster:

  • Voter Education & Awareness
  • Voter Registration & Turnout
  • Voter Protection & Poll Presence

Arts and Letters

In addition to delivering programs that align with the Five-Point Programmatic Thrust, the Burlington Alumnae Chapter facilitates arts-related programming that align with the National Commission on Arts & Letters:

  • In collaboration with Alamance County Public Libraries, the African American Read-In celebrates the works of African American authors and promotes literacy within our community.
  • Delta Red Carpet Events are special outings to support films and productions with majority Black casts, directors, and/or writers.
  • The Reel Beauty Film Festival is scheduled for April 2026 and will explore the impact of Black women in the fashion and beauty industries, highlighting their influence, challenges, and contributions.
